Spiral Joy Band (Official Site | Acid Marshmallow Video) hails from Virginia, founded by Pelt members Mikel Dimmick and Mike Gangloff and features various other contributing members in recorded and live context. Drawing from the approach of creating lengthy meditative drone immersions, and favoring wide arrays of instruments at disposal over fixed instrumentation, Spiral Joy Band gathers sounds from gongs, prayer bowls, sruti box, bowed string instruments, scattered percussion, and seemingly any instruments at the players' disposal to propel listeners upwards through trance. One of the prime motifs being emphasis on acoustic instrumentation, and a no-overdub, no amplification ehtos when it comes to recording. The band members show keen intuition into the ability to draw from and seamlessly juxtapose such disparate sound worlds as Appalachian American primitive folk, East Asian raga trance musics, and late twentieth century minimalism. --J Guy
