Michael Zerang (Official Site | Acid Marshmallow Video) | Michael Colligan (Acid Marshmallow Video) | Jim Baker (Acid Marshmallow Video) Your standard "power trio" this is not. Zerang plays drums and percussion, Baker on keyboards and electronics, and Colligan plays... well, dry ice. For those of you who haven't seen Colligan's work with the Lightbox Orchestra or any of his improvisational groupings around Chicago, he creatively melts a block of dry ice, using hot peices of metal, boiling teakettles, and other impliments to torture the ice, which bursts into a chorus of groans and wails that be the envy of any professional funeral mourner. Like Joe Colley's use of water added to dry clay, Colligan's ice show is more than a fascinating phenomenon; it's a previously unimagined musical instrument that can be as expressive as any synthesizer, drum, or piece of scrap metal. As for Zerang and Baker, their decades of ree improvisation in every conceivable situation make them capable of adding gasoline to any fire. --Chris Sienko
